Radical Honesty: Turning Assumptions into Curiosity in Relationships
Action Steps to stop assuming
Radical Honesty
Ending a cycle of assuming starts with radical honesty with yourself.
You must come face to face with your real, raw emotions. Welcome them in. Experience them fully so you can transmute them into clear language.
By opening the lines of communication, you turn assumptions into curiosity.
Action Steps:
Practice Identifying and Expressing Your Initial Feelings
When you notice you’re starting to assume someone’s intentions or feelings, take a moment to identify your first, raw emotion. Instead of jumping into overthinking or story-making, pause and focus on where that feeling sits in your body. Ask yourself:
What am I feeling right now?
Where do I feel it in my body?
What words capture this feeling?
Once you understand the initial emotion, express it to the person involved.
For example, "When you told me this, I felt [emotion, like heavy or sad]. Can we talk about this?"
Being honest and vulnerable helps clarify assumptions and leads to a compassionate conversation.
Feeling and expressing emotion, rather than creating stories or assumptions around it, significantly reduces misunderstandings.
